Project - Comprehensive Trauma Care Service along the National Highway

The Challenge

Fatal Diseases and Road Accidents are increasing by the day. It goes without saying that timely attention, professional diagnosis and modern treatment could make a big difference in reducing the mortality rate. Recent studies have shown that the National Highway # 17, which passes through Manipal/ Udupi has a very high accident rate with the maximum incidence along the 90 km stretch between Mangalore and Kundapura on the west coast of southern India. 'The Golden Hour1. Last year alone, about 750 accidents took place and 150 people died mainly in bus accidents. Many of them die before reaching the hospital as no emergency healthcare could be provided in that critical 'Golden Hour.'

The Opportunity

The Kasturba Hospital located in Manipal does have a Trauma Centre where on an average of 3, 200 patients are brought in to the trauma centre at Manipal every year. Patients with head injuries, abdominal injuries, chest and vascular injuries and other injuries are treated by departments which include a department of Plastic Surgery, department of Orthopedics dealing with hand, limb, spinal and similar injuries. Unfortunately the Hospital does not have the facility/ infrastructure to reach the victim at the site of accident. The patients are referred and transported by private agencies. The present project is intended to address this need. The following infrastructure requirements can be provided through the project Reaching the victim at the site of the accident and rendering first aid and life saving measures. A set of 10 adequately equipped Satellite Trauma Care Hospitals, will have to be provided along the highway from Goa to Mangalore, with trained paramedical staff. Transportation of the victim to the main Trauma Care Centre of the Kasturba Hospital. An Ambulance facility with centralized tracking facility to be provided. The present trauma center has to be shifted to a larger area nearer to the State Highway. Training of Medical and Paramedical Personnel in Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) courses.

Project Deliverables

Provision of such a Trauma Care Service is expected to save the lives of at least 1,000 patients.

Project Cost

The proposed Comprehensive Trauma Care Service Network with 10 specialized ambulances is expected to cost approximately Rs. 20 M (USD 0.44 M). Manipal has already made a contribution of Rs. 10 M (USD 0.22 M).

Project - The setting up of a Comprehensive Hemophilia Care Centre at Manipal

The Challenge

Hemophilia is a congenital bleeding disorder caused by deficiency of specific proteins in blood, which are required for normal clotting. Hemophiliacs bleed continuously following an injury. If not controlled immediately, bleeding could be a threat to life. There is no cure for hemophilia but episodes of bleeding can be controlled. Infusion of Anti Hemophiliac Factor (AHF) during such episodes is life sawing. Unfortunately, AHF is not easily available and is expensive.

The Opportunity

A large number of Hemophilia patients are admitted annually to the Manipal Hospital. There is an urgent need to set up a Comprehensive Hemophilia Care Centre at Manipal with the following objectives: To reach as many hemophiliacs as possible and to educate them and their families about the disease and the treatments available at the Centre. To make the treatment available at affordable costs and provide emergency care. To create awareness among healthcare professionals and patients. To provide Medical and Social Rehabilitation to the patients. It is proposed that the Centre will be managed by the Manipal Hemophilia Society, which is associated to the National and World Federation Hemophilia. The Society has currently 130 registered members. The present Corpus Fund available to the Society is inadequate to provide free / subsidized treatment to many of the needy patients.

Project Cost

To support the philanthropic activities of the Society, a corpus fund of Rs. 20 M (USD 0.44 M) needs to be set up.

Project - Modern Facilities for the Treatment of Cancer Patients at Manipal

The Challenge

The Founders of the Manipal group had visualized the need for providing medical treatment to a large number of cancer patients coming to the Manipal Hospital. In 1974, a department of Radiotherapy and Oncology was started in the Manipal Hospital. More than 400 patients were treated in the first year itself at subsidized costs. In 1991, a modern multi-disciplinary cancer hospital was started at Manipal. Since the inception of this Hospital, nearly 1,30,000 outpatients have been treated and over 2,660 surgeries performed by qualified and professional staff at the Hospital.

The Opportunity

In order to provide financial assistance to economically backward cancer patients and also to create awareness among the people about Cancer, a Cancer Care Fund has been started at the Manipal Academy of Higher Education. A corpus of Rs. 10 M (USD 0.22 M) is expected to be generated for supporting this objective. The number of needy patients is constantly increasing and with improved and advanced technologies now available, the facilities at the Hospital must be upgraded - now that more than a decade has passed since the inception of the Hospital.

Project Deliverables

The objective is to provide improved and modern treatment to the increasingly large number of cancer patients coming to Manipal and from nearby areas. The number of outpatients expected to be treated will be nearly 35,000 every year, with the corresponding increases in the number of surgeries to be performed using the newly created facilities and existing professional staff. Interested Partner Organizations will be provided a detailed Project Report and the feasibility study.

Project Cost:

The following facilities are proposed to be set up, for which funding is solicited: Linear Accelerator: (with IMRT/Multi leaf collimators and radio surgery equipment) Rs. 75 M (USD 1.7 M) Mammography Unit for Breast Cancer treatment Rs. 5 M (USD 0.11 M) Laryngeal Endoscopy (fiber optic endoscopy equipment) Rs. 0.3 M (USD 6,604) 14- Seater Camp Van : with accessories (for camp teams and giving palliative care) Rs. 1 M (USD 22,014) TOTAL (approx, USD 1.8 M) Rs. 81.3 M

Project - Orthodontic Treatment for Cleft Lip & Palate patients

The Challenge

A major problem of Dental Healthcare relates to providing Orthodontic treatment for Cleft Lip and Palate Patients, particularly common amongst children. Very often the treatment is expensive and cannot be afforded by the lower socio-economic strata of the society. This deformity very often results in very severe psychological handicap . The Department of Orthodontics at the Kasturba Medical College, attached to the Manipal Hospital in Manipal, has developed expertise in several areas of Orthodontics and has been serving the local community in this area of Dental Healthcare. More than 700 Dental Camps have been conducted in the nearby area of Manipal . Our hospital start is extremely competent in this area, but the expensive treatment cannot be afforded by a large section of the patients. We would like to provide the treatment at subsidized and affordable costs costs. Project Deliverable Cost: Rs. 5 M The Hospital would like to raise an endowment fund of Rs. 5 M (USD 0.11 M) that will be used to provide free dental service to a large number of patients during the next five years.

Areas for Support

We have to give greater attention to Needy Patients' Care for those who are admitted to our teaching hospitals but are not in a position to pay. We need to build more "Healthcare Centres" at the village and district level in several of our villages in the State. We would need to support "barefoot doctors" who would volunteer to attach themselves to these. Manipal Academy of Higher Education's medical faculty and the interns may be in a position to take up many more "Community Development Projects" in clusters of villages, in collaboration with the local NGO groups. In our ongoing activities to help the deserving, poor and needy from slums and from the outlying villages, we are looking for Donors and Sponsors who will financially support our endeavours:
